A candle that smells like where we live.
2021, a cabin off a cedar creek
We had a shelf full of candles that all smelled like the same department store. Then we spent a weekend at a cabin in the Cascades, and the thing we actually wanted to smell was the creek outside the door.
We came home, bought forty pounds of soy wax, and ruined a few batches learning. The first one worth keeping was Cedar Hollow. It still sells the way it did then.
Why soy, and why we bother
Paraffin is cheaper and throws scent harder. We do not use it. Soy burns cooler, lasts longer per ounce, and does not put petroleum soot into a room you are sitting in. If a candle gives you a headache, that is usually the fragrance oil, not the wax — which is why everything we use is phthalate-free.
It also means our candles have a smaller "hot throw" than a mass-market paraffin candle. We think that is the right trade. A candle should scent a room, not announce itself from the hallway.
Everything is poured by hand
We pour in batches of forty, in a workshop in Washington State. Every jar is wicked, poured, and labelled by hand, which means the wax surface is a little different in each one. If you get a jar with a slightly uneven top, that is not a defect — that is the whole method.
We ship in 1–2 business days. Small batches sell out, and when they do we restock within about two weeks.
The jar comes back
Amber glass is the most expensive part of a candle, and throwing it away is the most wasteful part of this business. Send an empty jar back and we refill it with any scent for $16, return postage included. About a third of our customers do it, and we would like that number to be higher.
Wholesale
We work with a small number of independent shops. Minimum order is 24 units at 50% of retail. Get in touch with your store name and state, and we will send the terms.
Batches of forty
Small enough that we check every jar. Large enough that we can keep the six core scents in stock.
No paraffin
100% soy wax, unbleached cotton wicks, phthalate-free fragrance. No dyes, ever.
Refill program
Send the jar back, we refill it for $16. Roughly a third of our customers already do.
